pfSense: Captive Portal

Disclosure: I am not connected with pfSense/BSD Perimeter LLC in any business manner, I am just a user. I created this feature focus for my own reasons but decided to publish it anyway.

Introduction

For the uninitiated pfSense is a standalone firewall/router the is based on FreeBSD which is designed for use on standard PC hardware. It uses the OpenBSD Packet Filter (hence the pf) for the firewall as well as advanced features such as hardware redundancy via CARP, VPN and Load balancing. However I will be talking about an interesting feature called the captive portal on pfSense 1.x and I will also be having a quick look into pfSense 2.0 which is yet to be released.

A captive portal normally sits between the client hosts on the network and the Internet. It normally requires a login from the user before permitting access. This is useful if you wish to allow/deny some people getting online with your wireless at your house party, stop visitors accessing the internet at the office or simply for displaying an acceptable use policy.

Captive portals will normally permit access to a IP/MAC address pair that has been authenticated by the device. As anyone that knows about networking will tell you both MAC and IP address can be easily spoofed by an attacker on a LAN to an already authenticated pair permitting the attackers traffic through the Portal. This weakness is something to keep in mind when thinking of using a captive portal.

Sharing Windows 7 Themes

This is a follow up article to my Creating Windows 7 Themes article.

Now that we have one or two of our own custom Themes made we can do a really neat thing with them and that is to share them. I am going to show you how to share Themes using my Animals example Theme that I made up, if you would like to download it just click here.

The first step is to go to the Personalize screen in the Control Panel. This can be done by either clicking Start, Control Panel then clicking Personalization or by right clicking the desktop and clicking Personalize. If you are using my example Theme then your Personalize screen should look something like this.

Mac OSX Slide Show Wallpapers

We've all taken a few pictures on holiday that remind us of the happy days. I'll be you showing how create a slide show of these pictures for your desktop. I've demonstrated two ways of doing this and its purely personal preference of which way works best for you.

I find that the iPhoto method works best for people that use a Mac and iPhoto as there primary photo storage place. The Non iPhoto method would work better for people who copy the files from another computer and may not even use iPhoto.

iPhoto Method
1. Open iPhoto and create a new album.

Windows 7 Features: The RC Themes

This is a follow up article on the Windows 7 Beta Styles article I wrote a few months ago. As you will see from the pictures below they are different from the ones in the beta (apart from the Windows 7 fish) and most of them are slide show backgrounds as well. I have also noticed that Microsoft seems to have for now anyway settled on calling them Themes rather than Styles, this may change in the final version of Windows 7 mind you.

Below I have posted the selection screen as well as selected one picture from each set for you to take a look at. Some are really cool pictures while others are quite bizarre.

Easy Jailing with The (PC-BSD) Warden

I've been looking at a neat little program that is part of PC-BSD called The Warden. With this program is very easy to setup and manage FreeBSD jails. The Warden supports pre packaged software that can be installed into jails called Inmates. In this example I will be using the Joomla Inmate package that installs Joomla, Apache, MySQL and PHP in a short space of time.

Installing The Warden

The Warden is installed on PC-BSD via the PBI system. Once the The Warden .pbi file has been downloaded to the computer it is a simple matter of double clicking the file which will ask to be run as root. You would need to enter your root password so the package as permission to install and then click ok.

Windows 7 RC

The IT Massive team have had a look at the new Windows 7 Release Candidate and here is what we think of it.

The new features of Windows 7

Windows 7 has several new features including Libraries, Device Stage, Home Groups and Windows Touch. There has also been several improvements to existing programs such as Word Pad, Paint and the Calculator as well as features added to the Aero interface such as Aero Snap, Aero Peek and Aero Shake. Businesses have not been left out either with features such as App Locker, Branch Cache and Direct Access.

Changes between the beta and RC

There has been several changes between the beta and the RC. Some big changes include Virtual Windows XP Mode (this is not included and has to be downloaded separately), Windows Peek now works with ALT+TAB, there are more themes and sound schemes, Windows Media Player 12 now has a new feature called RMS (Remote Media Streaming) and also supports the QuickTime MOV file format.

Smaller changes include, improved Jumplist functionality for some programs such as the Control Panel and Remote Desktop, there have been tweaks to Explorer and Libraries such as improving the way artists are sorted for music. Performance improvements have also been made such as trimming the WAV files of the logoff and shutdown sounds to save 400ms on shutdown. The footprint of the Operating System has been reduced, the pagefile pre-allocation size has been reduced and the reserved system partition used for features such as the Widows Recovery Environment and Bit Locker has been cut in half from 200MB to 100MB. As you can see some of these improvements are small tweaks but these changes just show you how Microsoft are paying attention to every single detail.

If you would like to see more changes and the thoughts of the developers on them check out Microsoft's Engineering Windows 7 blog here and here.
