Windows 7 Features: Libraries

Over the next few months we will be looking at several new features that have been added to Windows 7 as well as features from previous versions of Windows that have been improved in Microsoft's latest Operating System.

One of these new features in Windows 7 is Libraries.

Libraries are virtual folders that contain files of certain types such as documents, music, videos, pictures etc. Unlike normal folders, Virtual folders can contain files from several locations on your PC such as your local hard drive, a network share, an external USB hard drive or even someone else's Library on another PC on your network.

As an example I can have some music stored in the My Music folder on my PC, some on my external USB drive and some more stored on a server I have set up on my home network. Normally I would need to go to the folder on each device to access the music but with Libraries I can simply add all these different locations to my music library and they will all appear there as if they were all stored on my local computer.

Here is a screen shot of what the default Libraries folder looks like.

Look out for future articles on more features of Windows 7 as well as tips, tricks and how to guides.
