Ubuntu 9.04 Home Encryption
Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 9:25AM This article is based on a development version of Ubuntu (Alpha 4 used) and is subject to change. Encrypted Private Directory support was added in Ubuntu 8.10.
On the up coming Ubuntu 9.04 release, just after user account creation you will be asked if you want to encrypt your home directory. This new feature it similar to FileVault and it's very much streamlined into the normal login process (so much so that I didn't think it worked the first time). This feature is a welcome addition to Ubuntu in a time where more people have portable computers with sensitive information that needs to be protected.
LVM Encryption (whole disk) has been a part of Ubuntu for a while but it was a big performance hit on older hardware. This new feature will hopefully help bring encryption to the masses without having to worry about the technicalities.
