Mac Tip: Encrypted Disk Images
Friday, February 27, 2009 at 4:13PM In this mac tip we are going to create an encrypted disk image to store some sensitive data. The first thing that has to be done is to open the 'Disk Utility' App from the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
App menu -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
From here we will create a new disk image by clicking on the 'New Image' button.

From here you would enter the settings such as the name of the file, where the file will be stored, the image size and the strength of encryption. The image format should be set to 'sparse bundle disk image' or 'sparse disk image' if you're using less than 10.5 to make most efficient use of disk space. Encryption can be set to 256-bit AES or 128-bit AES, data requiring higher performance would be better suited to the less secure but faster 128-bit AES and things like documents and pictures would be better suited to the higher security of 256-bit AES.
If other people share the one user account on the Mac (which ideally they shouldn't) and you don't wish to give them access to the disk image remember to uncheck 'Remember password in my keychain'. This would mean that you would need to enter the password to mount the disk and remember to eject it when your finished with it.

To mount the image you need to double click on the file with the drive on it. To eject it you would right click and select eject "My Stuff" or open the Finder and look down the side for your Image name in the Devices list then simply click the eject icon next to it.
