Ubuntu 9.04 Beta
Monday, March 30, 2009 at 2:02PM The new beta release of Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) which will be sporting the new Gnome 2.26 release has been released and can be tested before the real release in April.
The Ubuntu team has been working on a few things one of which is improving the boot time. The boot times feel a lot faster than the old release but I have to ask does it really make that much difference? for me, no.
New style for notifications is a welcome change to the desktop as I feel that it's a bit neater than the previous system. A demonstration (flash video and pictures) of the effect can be found on Mark Shuttleworth's Blog.
Ext4 file system support was put into Ubuntu 9.04, I am a bit unsure of Ext4 as these stories sum it up pretty well Apps That Rely On Ext3's Commit Interval May Lose Data In Ext4 and Ext4 Data Losses Explained, Worked Around.
Stuff in Gnome 2.26 but not in Ubuntu, yet?
Volume Control Integrated with PulseAudio is something that really needs to be included with Ubuntu as PluseAudio was included in Ubuntu in version 8.04 (just under a year ago). PluseAudio has some advanced features like per-application volume control that would make a great addition to the release.
Conclusion
I'm not that impressed with the beta but I'm sure encrypted home directory will re-appear in the final release. I do feel the system to be a bit faster but my system is not slow in the first place so it makes little real difference. Ubuntu will be released with the 2.6.28 Linux kernel which has been shown to be slower then the newer 2.6.29 kernel by Phoronix, so when the Ubuntu 9.04 kernel is upgraded it should provide further performance improvements.
