Wikipedia Mobile pretty much does what it says on the tin, it provides you with a mobile version of Wikipedia.

The app has a simple, clean layout. At the top is the search bar and down the bottom there are several buttons. On the left is a forward and back button and on the right is three buttons, the first is a home button, the second is a reload and the last is a history button. There is only one extra option you can access from your settings menu on your iPhone and that is a log option, it's only handy if you are a developer of the app really.

The home page is a stripped down version of the normal Wikipedia home page, you get the day's featured article, the day's news headlines and an option to view the normal Wikipedia home page if you so choose.

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 Over Wifi and 3G the app loads pages fairly quickly and for the most part the pages load well. The first few paragraphs of a page are presented to you and each section of an article is collapsed and you just expand the parts you want to see.

There is a negative to this app, there is no pinch zoom so you can't zoom in to text or photos and the most annoying thing is tables don't render properly, the first few columns render on the screen but then eventually the right hand side ones just get cut off. There is a solution to the problem which is at the very bottom of each article there is a button to view the page on the main Wikipedia site but it's not really the best solution since you are then zooming in and out in safari to try to make the text or photo the size you want.

Wikipedia has pretty much made this app obsolete now by offering a mobile version of Wikipedia by simply going to the site in mobile Safari, ok pinch zoom doesn't work here either but all the text and most of the photos fit in the page and also you can move left and right too see anything that has been cut off, a much better experience than the app in my opinion.

So is it a good idea to download the app? Well no, I think a much better solution is to simply add the mobile version in Safari to the home screen since you get much better functionality.
